How does the media portray beauty and body image?
The media does it's best to portray beauty as somthing you have to have in order to be sucessful. In main stream media, classic beauty is seen as okay but the most beautiful are rail thin, perfect skin, long beautiful hair, 1,000 dollar jeans and 5,000 dollar dresses don't hurt the image. There is sooo much to be said about the media's portail of beauty and body image.
I personally love when they have people battling anrexoia on their prime time shows, sitting next to the bed of a malnourished girl proclaiming how sad it is to see a person in this state, espically that they felt a need to be this thin. Show ends and a new one starts only to headline how great a star looks in her new dress who's weight is only 5 pounds more.
Anyone who fits the above stats is beautiful, sexy and attractive according to the media.
How does it differ from other cultures portrayal of beauty?
That's a tough one! Beauty is important in all cultures. I would think the US is taking it a bit farther than many others but when it comes down to it beauty is still seen as the same in many. I'll have to think about that and get back to you.
