I agree with the first poster. There has been an experiment about showing babies different faces. Babies were more attracted and lingered longer on symmetrical faces.
Although tastes vary greatly among individuals and in various regions of the world as well as different quite a bit throughout centuries, there seems to be a kind of "universal beauty" which has mainly been assigned to symmetry and shape of the face and body.
I think it was Leonardo da Vinci who came up with a mathematical explanation of the ideal symmetry of the human body.
I do not agree. The most beautiful part of any human is the person inside the body. Noses, hair, feet, I dont think any of them truly matter compared to a persons personality.
As has been mentioned, it can be shown that even before we are loaded with ideas by others, we are drawn to faces with greater symmetry & upset by those that vary greatly from what we would expect a face to feature, (both in terms of proportions & locations).
Since the question is about beauty I thought I would include a finding on research of universal concepts of beauty. Well not strictly universal but global at least :)
Across all cultures - some with drastically contradictory ideals for the human form, uniform skin texture & tone was prized regardless of any other ideas of what was beautiful.
This is argued is because it is an 'honest signal' (i.e. one that cannot be faked) for health in an individual. Symmetry is also claimed to be an 'honest signal' for healthy genetic development.
I have noticed that with the current trend for more 'unique' & startling faces in the model industry, that some model's faces could be construed as quite inelegant features which veer greatly from the more traditional concept of a beautiful or handsome face, but they do tend to be on people who have strinkingly symmetry to their faces & when you look it is this more than their 'looks' or features that is making them appealing (also alot of art direction, lighting & creativity by the photographer does not hamper this effect).
I hope that I explain myself.
People's faces are more asymmetrical than we realise. This is because our brain interprets a faces features rather than it being just seen by the visual cortex like any other image. There is a simple & baffling test that lets you appreciate how much your mind interprets the visual info from when it recognises it as a face. I will try & find a link to an online version & post it here as it seems relevant & is a cool thing to realise.
fact. the more symetrical a face is or nose, that will be the most attractive
Your nose or any other specific feature decides the beauty aof the human body. I believe that the beauty of the human body is a combination of the beauty of all of you from head to toe.
